Writing a novel? Wonder if it’s ready for publication?

Whether you’re submitting a few chapters in a contest or sending your book to an editor or agent, Bradley Writing and Editing Services will help you improve your novel and your writing skills through any of the following options.

This is the specialty of Bradley Writing and Editing Services. I’ll examine your story’s big picture, covering things like:

  • Plot
  • Opening Hook
  • Character Development
  • Setting
  • Story Structure
  • Point of View

I’ll read as much of your manuscript as you’d like, watching for trouble spots in each of these areas. I’ll include comments in the manuscript so you can see where, for example, the plot lacks believability or where you’re missing an opportunity to deepen a character.

From there, I’ll give suggestions for improving and even an example or two if it’s a writing technique you’re not strong in.

Once I’ve read your entire submission, I’ll write a detailed analysis of the story, probably a handful of pages in length. You’ll understand what worked, what didn’t work, and what steps need to be taken to make your story stronger.

Substantive editing does not look at grammar, punctuation, or even word choices. The main reason editors and agents reject a book is because something about the story isn’t working. Once you’ve perfected your plot and characters, it’s time to move on to line editing.

The Cost:

  • 1 to 4,000 words — $55
  • 4,001 to 8,000 words — $85
  • 8,001 to 12,000 words — $115
  • 12,001 to 16,000 words — $155
  • 16,001 to 20,000 words — $195
  • 20,001 to 25,000 words — $245

Line Editing should be one of the last steps in the editing process. For any book that has a solid plot and strong characters — a book that might be ready for publication with some fine tuning — I’ll polish the entire submission so that it portrays that clean and professional image you need.

I will:

  • Delete unnecessary words
  • Minimize speaker attribution
  • Mark errors in continuity (hair or eye color has changed)
  • Mark awkward or unclear wording
  • Correct improper word usage (there instead of their)
  • Correct errors in punctuation, verb tenses, spelling, and other typographical mistakes
  • Other general polishing

Through all of this, I’ll retain your writing style and voice. My comments will be marked through Track Changes which allows you the final yes or no. Where necessary, I’ll give explanations on why I made the changes I did.

Haven’t found exactly what you need? I’m happy to customize a service just for you and your book. Need some length cut off your novel? I can tailor the line editing to get your book under word count. Wonder if your plot is believable? I can rework the substantive edit to focus solely on that. Need something else? Send me an email through the Contact Page. I’ll try to get back to you within twenty-four hours.

Submission Guidelines: Please do not send me anything without contacting me first. Submissions must be on 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper, one-sided, double-spaced, with Times New Roman or Courier 12-point font. Margins should be at least one inch on all four sides. I use Microsoft Word’s Track Changes for all electronic submissions (which I prefer). If you need a service done on hard copy, please add 20% to all costs.
